Rihanna’s S & M Video: Sexy or Offensive?

While I am personally I big fan of Rihanna, I am a little uncomfortable with this video.  She is a beautiful girl with an incredible voice and a knack for writing catchy tunes.  She is tremendously successful already, does she need to resort to such explicit and exploitive measures to sex her music?  Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for sexy videos and photo shoots, but this is a little much.  Considering that last year and the year before she was making headlines for being a victim of domestic violence at the hands of music artist Chris Brown, one would think she would never portray herself in this way.  I suppose this video could be her way of asserting control, taking back the power of her own life, and showing that she is not a victim; but, again, this is a bit excessive (nsfw).

Not much offends me, but women  taking photos or filming videos in which they are bound and gagged is just degrading and if a guy is turned on by a woman being held against her will then he has an issue.  There is a difference between rough sex and helpless submission.  In the everyday world I don’t have a problem with what people do behind closed doors as long as it’s consensual.  However, Rihanna is a successful young woman and role model to a millions of girls around the world.  She should use that influence to empower young woman, not encourage victimization.

Check out the video yourself and let me know what you think:
